The Future of Kak Magazine

Kak Magazine

The future of the popular graphic-design magazine Kak has been on everybody’s mind ever since the Russian Þscal crisis broke out. Run on a shoestring by Petr Bankov and Katerina Kozhukhova, two alumni of the Moscow Printing Institute (the main typographic design school in the USSR, and now in Russia), it appeared doomed to extinction. Miraculously, its double issue, No. 4-5, which was on press in September 1998, saw the light of day in early October. Even more surprisingly, the next issue, No. 6, appeared in early January 1999. On January 15, a gleeful party was held to mark the second year of Kak; it was enthusiastically attended by the many fans of, and contributors to, the beloved magazine, whose fate may serve as a symbol of the pride and endurance of Russian design.
