Dutch brewer Grolsch recently began a magazine ad campaign featuring Vincent van Gogh. For the campaign, they chose Edwardian™ Medium, a warm and friendly typeface designed by British designer Colin Brignall. Reflecting the charm of the early Edwardian period for which it is named, this typeface has a distinct personality — from the quirky lowercase “a” to the loopy descenders on the other lowercase letters. O’Neill has been the premier manufacturer of wetsuits since 1952, when hardcore surfer Jack O’Neill invented a lightweight, flexible outfit to protect surfers from bone-chilling waters of the Pacific Ocean. The O’Neill Web site, recently featured in the Society of Publication Designers journal, uses surfing graphics and text that convey speed, originality and innovation. For the site’s design, O’Neill’s designers chose ITC Orbon and ITC Airstream, two relatively new typefaces from ITC. Click on the image at left to see examples of the O’Neill web site. The work of California lettering artist Patty King has been featured on many book covers. Two recent books, A Mother’s Journey and The Ancient Cookfire, feature ITC Skylark, a traditional brush script typeface with a vigor not found in many other designs.
