Avante Garde GothicITC Avant Garde Gothic revitalized the design community when it was released in the 1970’s. More than 20 years later it is being reborn. Athletic shoe manufacturer Adidas created their original corporate logo in the 70’s using the demi bold weight of ITC Avant Garde. After disappearing amid the crush of numerous competitors in the 80’s, Adidas is back strong in the 90’s. While new ad campaings and tie-ins with such marquee sports franchises as the New York Yankees have increased their visibility, Adidas decided to simply update their logo, retaining the strong geometric forms already created using ITC Avant Garde Gothic, rather than forging a totally new identity.

Avant Garde GothicCalling itself a “new magazine for a new lifestyle,” British culture magazine Red has relied quite heavily on ITC Avant Garde to document this new lifestyle. In using ITC Avant Garde Extra Light extensively in section heads and feature story headlines, Red’s designers have modified the typeface slightly, changing the spacing and overlapping many of the letterforms, an effect that Herb Lubalin would have undoubtedly approved of. CancioneIn the advertising supplements of most Sunday newspapers, Sizzler Restaurants ran a recent promotion for their new line of seafood dinners and selected ITC Cancione as the lead typeface for the campaign. With its rough appearance and nicked edges, ITC Cancione conveys an outdoors look, which can be associated with hiking, rock-climbing and fishing. Click on the image at left to see the ad.
