ITC Edwardian Script Pro
Most scripts available today are of the calligraphic variety, echoing the work of ancient scribes with their inkwells and flat-tipped pens. Most – but not all.
Unlike its calligraphic brethren, Ed Benguiat’s ITC Edwardian Script offers letterforms influenced by a more flexible steel-point pen. This writing instrument can be pushed as well as pulled, which means that thick and thin strokes are produced by varying the writing pressure, rather than changing the angle of the nib.
An extraordinary amount of time and care went into the design of ITC Edwardian Script. Not only were the delicate, sophisticated letterforms painstakingly drawn and redrawn, but the connections between the letters were crafted to create perfect junctures between the full range of possible letter combinations. Benguiat also rendered a series of alternate swash characters and a suite of "baroque" alternate capitals for those special occasions that demand something unique.
The eminent calligrapher Paul Standard made a profound impression on Benguiat’s design philosophy and work ethic. Standard taught Benguiat the basics of letterform design, gave him an appreciation for the beauty of well-drawn scripts and, perhaps most importantly, instilled a commitment to excellence that permeates all that Benguiat does. Benguiat often complains that he is never satisfied with his work – as he says, “only the next typeface will be perfect.”
ITC Edwardian Script may not be “perfect” in Benguiat’s eyes, but it comes suspiciously close. Long an ITC bestseller, ITC Edwardian Script is now available as an OpenType font, with all that technology’s features and benefits. In addition to English, the new ITC Edwardian Script Pro fonts support most European and many Central European languages, including Baltic, Turkish, Czech, Hungarian and Polish.
The Regular and Bold weights of ITC Edwardian Script can be purchased individually, or in the complete ITC Edwardian Script Complete Family Package.
