The euro is the single currency of the European Monetary Union (EMU) which was implemented by 11 member states on January 1, 1999. These states are Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Finland.

The graphic symbol for the euro looks like a lowercase “e” with two clearly marked, horizontal parallel lines across it. It was inspired by the Greek letter epsilon, in reference to the cradle of European civilization and to the first letter of the word “Europe.” The parallel lines represent the stability of the euro.

To help designers and publishers include this new symbol in their work, ITC is making available 16 new euro fonts – free of charge – which have been designed to work with a wide range of existing typefaces. Crafted by the ITC type development team, these fonts cover a range of four weights – book, medium, bold and black – and are provided in roman and italic styles. There are serif and sans serif variations of each of the weights and styles.

The fonts – which can be downloaded by clicking on the links below marked MAC or PC – contain the euro symbol in all of the character positions of each font. Simply type any letter and select the correct ITC euro font and the euro symbol will appear in your documents. We have provided both PostScript Type 1 and TrueType versions of each of the fonts in the serif and sans serif packages. You only need to install one version.

If your company or firm would like a design-sensitive euro symbol added to existing ITC typefaces, please send an e-mail with your request to info@itcfonts.com.

While the euro will be a recognized currency in financial markets starting January 1, 1999, euro notes and coins will not come into general circulation until January 2002, and will become the only currency of the EMU zone starting July 1, 2002. After that date, other national currencies, such as the Dutch guilder, German mark and French franc, will cease to be legal tender.

There are 7 euro notes in denominations of 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5 euros, and 8 euro coins denominated in 2 and 1 euros, then 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents. Every euro coin will carry a common European face. On the obverse, each member state will decorate the coins with their own motifs.

For more information on the use and development of the euro, please visit the European Monetary Union web site.
